5 Practical Tips to Extend the Replacement Cycle of Water Treatment Equipment Consumables
The replacement cost of water treatment equipment consumables (filter elements, RO membranes, resins, etc.) accounts for 40%-60% of the total operation and maintenance costs. In fact, as long as we do a good job in "advance protection, scientific operation, and timely maintenance", we can significantly extend the service life of consumables and reduce costs without affecting water quality. The following 5 tips are simple and easy to operate, suitable for household, commercial and industrial equipment:
1.Strengthen Raw Water Pretreatment: Reduce the Burden on Core Consumables
Sediment, hardness and residual chlorine in raw water are the "culprits" for the rapid failure of consumables. Blocking these impurities in advance can reduce the burden on core components (such as RO membranes and resins):
For well water and river water (high turbidity), a simple quartz sand filter can be added at the front end of the equipment to filter out large particles of sediment first, extending the PP cotton filter element replacement cycle from 1 month to 3 months;
In areas with heavy scale (high raw water hardness), it is necessary to install water softening equipment or add scale inhibitors: softening resin can remove calcium and magnesium ions in advance to avoid scaling of RO membranes (unsoftened RO membranes may be damaged in 1 year, but can be used for 3 years after softening); for household scenarios where equipment installation is not desired, adding food-grade scale inhibitors once a month (costing a few yuan) can also delay scaling;
If tap water has a disinfection smell (excessive residual chlorine) or peculiar smell (high organic matter content), ensure the effectiveness of the activated carbon filter element - choose high-quality activated carbon with an iodine value ≥1200mg/g, which can fully adsorb residual chlorine and avoid oxidizing the RO membrane (RO membranes burned by residual chlorine will have a sharp drop in desalination rate and can only be replaced in advance).
2.Optimize Operation Parameters: Don't Let Consumables "Work Overload"
Incorrect pressure, flow rate and temperature during equipment operation will accelerate the aging of consumables:
Control three key values for the RO system: pressure according to the membrane model (0.5-0.8MPa for low-pressure membranes, 1.0-1.5MPa for high-pressure membranes). Too high pressure will damage the membrane, and too low pressure cannot filter cleanly; adjust the concentrated water ratio to 1:3 (produce 1 ton of pure water and discharge 0.3 tons of concentrated water). Too little discharge leads to rapid impurity accumulation, and too much discharge wastes water;
Do not regenerate ion exchange resins frequently: if the raw water has many ions (high TDS), pass it through the RO membrane first before entering the resin. The adsorption pressure of the resin is reduced, and the regeneration cycle can be extended from 1 month to 2 months; use 8%—10% salt water for regeneration, not too concentrated, otherwise it will "burn" the resin;
Control the temperature at 15-30℃: add thermal insulation layer to the equipment in winter and avoid exposure to the sun in summer. Too low temperature results in high water viscosity and slow flow rate, making impurities easy to deposit; too high temperature will accelerate the aging of membranes and resins, shortening the service life by 20%.

3.Clean Consumables Regularly: Don't Let "Dirt" Block Consumables
Many times, consumables are not broken, but only have impurities attached to the surface, and can be used again after cleaning:
activated carbon filter elements (industrial large-size models) can be backwashed: household small filter elements are disposable, but industrial 40-inch large filter elements can be backwashed with compressed air or clean water to remove surface sediment and be used for another 1-2 months;
RO membranes must be cleaned regularly: after 3-6 months of use, if the water output slows down and TDS increases, circulate and clean with citric acid (for scaling) or sodium hydroxide (for organic pollution) solution for 30-60 minutes. The cleaned membrane can last for another year;
Backwash resin if it cakes: after long-term use, suspended solids will adhere to the surface of the resin, leading to decreased exchange efficiency. Backwash with clean water from the bottom once a month to remove impurities, and the resin can maintain "activity".
4.Use the Equipment According to Actual Needs: Don't Let the Equipment "Idle"
Many people are used to keeping the equipment on 24 hours a day, which is actually unnecessary and will increase the wear and tear of consumables:
Turn off the power of household water purifiers when not in use to avoid continuous discharge of waste water and continuous filtration of "empty water" by filter elements;
For industrial equipment that produces during the day and stops at night, set timed on/off to allow the equipment to rest at night, reducing the operating time of pumps and membranes;
Do not repeatedly heat commercial direct drinking fountains, and control the water temperature at 40-60℃, which can not only avoid rapid scaling of scale on the heating tube, but also reduce the adsorption load of activated carbon.
5.Do a Good Job in Daily Inspection: Detect Problems Early and Solve Them Early
Consumables have "signals" before problems occur. Timely detection can avoid scrapping:
Check the pressure difference: if the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of PP cotton and filter elements exceeds 0.1MPa, it means it is blocked. Clean or replace it immediately, do not force it to cause damage to the subsequent RO membrane;
Test water quality: use a TDS pen to test the produced water for household use, and check the online resistivity meter for industrial use. If the value suddenly deteriorates, the membrane may be broken or the resin is saturated. Timely treatment can avoid further pollution by impurities;
Check for leaks: repair water leaks at pipe joints and filter element seals in a timely manner to prevent water from soaking the consumables, leading to mold or damage.
As long as these 5 points are done well, the service life of easily worn consumables such as PP cotton and activated carbon can be extended by 50%, and core consumables such as RO membranes and resins can even be used for an additional 1-2 years. This not only saves the cost of replacing consumables, but also reduces the trouble of equipment shutdown for maintenance.
