What Factors Will Affect the Water Quality of Ultrapure Water Equipment?

Whether the water produced by ultrapure water equipment is pure enough depends not only on the quality of the equipment, but also on four key links: "raw water, equipment parts, operation settings, and daily maintenance". Even a small problem in one link may cause the water quality to fail to meet the standards. The impact of each factor is explained in simple terms below:

Raw Water Quality: No Matter How Powerful the Equipment Is, It's Hard to Save Poor "Raw Materials"

Ultrapure water is purified from raw water (such as tap water, well water). The amount of impurities in the raw water directly determines the difficulty of purification:

Hard Water or Water with High Impurities: Well water and groundwater are often "hard water" (containing more calcium and magnesium ions), or raw water with high dissolved salts will form a layer of "scale" on the surface of the RO membrane (core filter component) in the equipment. This scale will block the small pores of the membrane, resulting in poor filtration effect and more impurities in the produced water; it will also "overwork" the subsequent EDI module (deep desalination component), making it impossible to remove ions completely, and the purity of water will naturally decrease.

Water with Odor or Residual Chlorine: Tap water is often disinfected with chlorine. If the residual chlorine is not treated properly, it will "burn" the RO membrane. A damaged membrane is like a sieve with holes, and impurities will directly leak through; if the raw water contains organic matter (such as humus that may be present in river water and lake water), it will adhere to the membrane to form a "dirty membrane", which not only affects filtration, but also causes the organic matter content (TOC) in the water to exceed the standard, which will cause problems when used in the electronics and pharmaceutical industries.

Water with Sediment or Bacteria: Turbid raw water (such as rainwater and surface water) contains sediment that will block the front filter. Unfiltered small particles will also scratch the RO membrane; if the raw water contains bacteria, the bacteria will "settle and multiply" in the equipment to form a sticky "biofilm", which will eventually lead to excessive bacteria in the produced water, posing safety risks when used in the pharmaceutical industry.

Equipment Configuration: Choosing the Right Parts Ensures Water Quality

The quality of the equipment's "hardware" directly determines how pure it can be purified:

Lack of Key Parts: For example, without an activated carbon filter, residual chlorine cannot be removed, and the RO membrane will be damaged quickly; without a softening resin, hard water directly enters the RO system, the membrane scales quickly, and the water quality is definitely poor; the pore size of the front precision filter element is too large (such as using 20 microns instead of 5 microns), small particles leak through, and the RO membrane is easily scratched.

Wrong Core Parts: For example, using an RO membrane for treating ordinary water to treat water with high impurities will result in insufficient filtration effect; the EDI module is too small, the processing capacity cannot keep up, and the purity of water cannot be improved; the polishing mixed bed uses ordinary resin instead of high-purity resin required by the electronics industry, and the resin itself will leach impurities, leading to excessive metal ions in the water.

Operation Parameters: Incorrect Settings Make the Equipment "Work in Vain"

No matter how good the parts are, incorrect operating parameters of the equipment are useless:

Inappropriate Pressure and Temperature: The RO membrane needs appropriate pressure to filter water cleanly. Too low pressure cannot filter out impurities; too low temperature results in poor water fluidity, slow water production and impure water; too high temperature will age the RO membrane, shorten its service life and leak impurities.

Incorrect Water Flow Ratio: The RO system divides into "pure water" and "concentrated water" (waste water with impurities). If too little concentrated water is discharged, impurities accumulate quickly on the membrane surface and scale soon; if too much is discharged, water is wasted, the pure water output is low, and the membrane may be stressed unevenly, affecting the filtration effect.

Daily Maintenance: Without Maintenance, the Equipment Will "Break Down" Early

Like a car, equipment is prone to problems without maintenance:

Failure to Replace Filter Elements and Membranes in Time: If the front PP cotton filter element is blocked and not replaced, impurities will leak to the back; if the RO membrane is not replaced after 2-3 years of use, the membrane pores will be blocked or broken, and the water will definitely be impure; if the polishing resin is saturated and not replaced, it cannot adsorb residual ions, and the purity of water will drop sharply.

Failure to Clean and Disinfect: If the RO membrane is scaled and not cleaned, the filtration effect will get worse and worse; if the water tank and pipelines in the equipment are not disinfected, bacteria will multiply in large numbers, and the final produced water will have excessive microorganisms; if the online monitoring instruments are not calibrated, the displayed water quality data is inaccurate, which may lead to misjudgment that the water quality meets the standards, but it is actually unqualified.
